ST. MARY SCHOOL

Kindergarten

Homework

Homework in Kindergarten is sent home every Monday. Homework typically consists of math worksheets that coincide with the lesson taught that day and our letter of the week assignment. For our letter of the week assignment, I will send home a letter on Monday explaining our focus letter. I ask that you have your child look through magazines and or newspapers to find a picture that begins with the featured letter. I will then add their picture to our alphabet board. All homework assignments are due on Friday.

Throughout the school year we will be working on the basic skills needed to learn to read. In order to accomplish this we will be learning sight words or what we call them in our classroom "popcorn" words. Popcorn words are words that pop up often in our reading and writing. Practicing with your child is important in order to help them become fluent readers and writers. Each week I will send home the new popcorn words to add to the list. Please keep these words in your child’s popcorn container and have your child practice them frequently.

I encourage you to please read with your child daily, and ask questions about what he/she is reading! This can be a combination of read to self as well as being read to by you. Make sure you are tracking as you read with them. Research has shown daily reading to be one of the most important factors in predicting student success in school.
